Administrative / biographical background:

From before the Second World War until 1974 responsibility for consumer safety rested with the Home Office. On the establishment of the Department of Prices and Consumer Protection (DPCP) in 1974 consumer safety became one of its responsibilities, and a Consumer Safety Unit was established in 1977.

On the dissolution of the DPCP in 1980, responsibility was transferred to the Department of Trade.
