Administrative / biographical background:

United Kingdom - Dominions Wool Disposals Ltd (The Joint Organisation) was incorporated in 1945 after a conference of experts and officials of the United Kingdom, Australian, New Zealand and South African governments had made recommendations. It was to effect the orderly disposal of the wartime surpluses of wool held in the United Kingdom and to arrange for the marketing of future clips, while keeping prices appropriately stable.

The organisation had an active subsidiary in each Dominion to conduct local operations and to act on its behalf. There were separate 'pools' (United Kingdom/Australia, United Kingdom/South Africa and United Kingdom/New Zealand) operating on a 50/50 basis of financial responsibility for the wool of the respective Dominions, with the organisation determining selling policy. The operating expenses of the organisation were borne equally by the wool growers and the organisation.

A Commonwealth Wool Conference, which met on 30 January 1952 to review its operations, decided that its work had been successfully accomplished and was nearing completion. The final meeting of the shareholders was held on 10 March 1954.
