Description available at other catalogue level

Note: The order books fail us from 2 September 1658 to January 1659. The gap may be filled by a transcript (PRO 30/17/33) among the papers of Henry Petrie, Keeper of Records at the Tower 1819-1840, presented to the Public Record Office in 1919. This covers 3 September to 19 January 1659. In the absence of this, the editor of the Calendar remedied the gap as far as possible from the surviving indexes to the order books (see below), dates for index entries being supplied from other available sources such as the two letter books (SP 25/98 and 99), original orders, endorsements on petitions, warrants and passes (for a table of the missing material see the preface to the 1658-1659 volume of the Calendar, p xvi). Ironically the indexes used by the editor are now missing, but there are alternative sources for the transactions of the Council in 1659 in addition to the Petrie transcript. They are both in the Bodleian library, Oxford, in the Rawlinson collection. Rawl C 179 is a minute book of the proceedings of the Council of State from 19 May to 10 August 1659, and Rawl A 134 details the proceedings of the Council from 7 June to 20 October 1659. Rawl C 179 is available on microfilm as PRO 28/118. SP 25/79 is a surviving order book for 11 August to 25 October 1659, but there is none to cover 3 January to May 1660, for which the index survives.
