Entry Book of General Orders.

  • 'Canada. General Orders No.1 Provision Office'.
  • General Orders issued on behalf of the Commander of the Forces [Lieutenant General Sir George Prevost] by the Adjutant General's Office at the headquarters in Quebec. There is also one Departmental Order for the Commissariat Department.
  • The orders cover the following subjects: accommodation, allowances, appointments, promotions, transfers and discharges, arms and ammunition, boards of enquiry and survey, clergymen, contracts for supplies and services, courts martial, declaration of war by the United States [f.79], disembarkation and embarkation of troops, dismissal from the service, embodiment of Flank Battalions, equipment, establishment of regimental schools, forage, formation of the Glengarry Fencibles and the Canadian Voltiguers, fuel, leave, medical, method of issue of stores by the Commissariat, parades, pay, pensions for widows of Paymasters, rations, recruiting, regulations governing the issue of provisions to the wives, widows children and orphans of soldiers, returns, shipping, standards for recruits, stores, transport and working parties.
  • The majority of the orders were signed by Edward Baynes [Colonel, Nova Scotia Fencible Infantry], the Adjutant General North America. The name of Major General [Francis] de Rottenburg is frequently given at the foot of the orders. [He was the commander of Montreal District.]
  • The index at the front of the volume lists the orders alphabetically by subject.
