Administrative / biographical background:

The Director of Naval Construction (DNC), who was under the Controller of the Navy, was concerned with the field of warship construction and design. He was also responsible for the Admiralty Experiment Works at Haslar and the Naval Construction Research Establishment at Rosyth.
In 1959 the Department became the Naval Construction Division of the Ship Department under the Director General of Ships.
