This series contains files (PE series) of the Domestic Economy Sector, Public Enterprises Group, which comprised three divisions: PE1 Energy Division; PE2 Transport Industries Division; and PE3 Nationalised Industries Policy Division.

New files series were initiated to reflect the Treasury re-organisation of 1975, although in this instance the function continued unchanged.

Administrative / biographical background:

Files raised after the 1975 reorganisation were registered in the new 'PE' series, which had a separate numerical classification for the subject index headings used to create files. This prefix applied up to the 1981 Treasury reorganisation when the 'PE' files ceased to be raised, and from that date the subjects were broken down into several different prefixes:

  • ACW Air, Cable and Wireless;
  • AS Air, Shipbuilding;
  • CEN Coal, Electricity, Nuclear Power, Department of Energy Votes;
  • GEM Gas, Energy Expenditure and Manpower;
  • NIP Nationalised Industries Policy;
  • NIPEM Nationalised Industry Pay, and Development;
  • NIPPA Nationalised Industry Pay, Pensions and Accounts;
  • NIR Nationalised Industries Remuneration (replaced NIPPA);
  • OGEP Oil, Gas, and Energy Policy (followed on by OP);
  • OP Oil Policy;
  • PAD Privatisation and Assets Disposals;
  • PASS Ports, Air, Shipbuilding and Steel;
  • STI Surface Transport Industries.
