Description:

The series contains monthly returns of merchant ships originally built under Admiralty licence including details of their names, type, licence number, speed, shipyard, builder, owner, gross tonnage, date of keel laying and date of completion, quarterly returns of orders, returns of licences cancelled and returns of cancellations and amendments to ships ordered.

There are also statistics based on reports from shipbuilders of the gross tonnage of merchant ships under construction or on order and regional statistics of repairs, conversions, orders and ships under construction.

Custodial history: Records created in the Admiralty and subsequently passed to the Ministry of Transport when it assumed responsibilty for the collection of the statistics. The Department of Trade and Industry acquired the volumes because of its interest in the shipbuilding industry and specifically employment within it.
Selection and destruction information: All the volumes have been preserved. The records have been selected under theme 2.2.1.2 Management of the economy and theme 2.2.2.1 The economic, social and demographic condition of the UK, as documented by the state's dealings with individuals, communities and organisations outside its own formal boundaries .
