Administrative / biographical background:

The Public Sector (Economic Unit) was established in January 1973 as a result of the reorganisation of the Finance Group. It came under the newly created Public Sector Group (B), part of the Public Sector Group, one of three main policy groups in the Treasury.

PS (EU) was organised into two main divisions, PS (EU) 1 and PS (EU) 2.

PS (EU) 1 was responsible for providing economic advice to the following Treasury divisions and on the following topics:

  • Social Services (SS): general
  • Defence Policy and Materiel (DM): general
  • Public Enterprises (PE): general
  • Environment and Public Purchasing (EP): general
  • Finance Division on issues affecting Social Security and tax policy: general

In addition to the above, PS (EU) 1 was responsible for the co-ordination of information and policy on economic research and for liaising with universities in relation to this.

PS (EU) 2 was responsible for providing economic advice, to the following Treasury divisions, on the following topics:

  • agriculture section of Agriculture, Transport and Trade (AT) Division: EEC aspects of regional policy
  • domestic regional policy section of Agriculture, Transport and Trade (AT) Division: industrial advice and employment policy
  • General Expenditure (GE) Division: general
  • Exchequer and Audit Department: general
  • Management Accounting Unit (MAU): general Programme Analysis and Review (PAR) questions
