Description:

George IVES, aliases INES, EYAN, SMITH, BROWN: British. Ives came to notice as a communist in 1926 and then in 1929 as a member of and employed by the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) as a courier relaying communist work to London from the north of England. By 1931 he was a chauffeur for the Soviet Trade Delegation and in the same year visited the Soviet Union. He was active in Party work, including in the production of subversive literature for the armed forces. In 1936 he again visited the USSR for a training course at the Lenin School and in 1938 joined the International Brigade in Spain and on return to the UK was employed by the International Brigade Association. He was drafted into the Army in 1944 and kept under observation. After the war he was employed as a driver by various Eastern European embassies and after 1957 by the General Post Office, continuing his Party membership and activities
