Hastings Walter Kamuzu BANDA: born in British Central Africa (Malawi). Dr BANDA lived and practised as a doctor in the UK in the 1940s, moving to the Gold Coast (Ghana) in 1953. From there in 1958 he moved to Nyasaland (Malawi). In 1959 he was detained but released the following year to become leader of Nyasaland's independence movement
