Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company, 1792-1880

Physical description: 375 files, rolls and volumes
Administrative / biographical background:

Incorporated by act of 3rd June 1792 (32 Geo 3, cap.102) as "The Company of Proprietors of the Monmouthshire Canal Navigation".

By the Newport & Pontypool Railway Act of 31st July 1845 (8 & 9 Vic, cap.169) the Canal Navigation Company was authorised to make a railway from Newport to Pontypool. An Act of 13th August 1846 (9 & 10 Vic, cap.371) recited that this railway had not yet been made and provided for certain branch railways to be connected with it and for incorporation of a new company to be called the Monmouthshire Railway Company. Power was given for this new company to purchase the Monmouthshire Canal Company but was not exercised, for under Act 11 & 12 Vic, cap.120 (14th August 1848) certain provisions of the Act of 31st July 1845 above mentioned were amended and extended, and the name of the Canal Navigation Company was changed to "The Monmouthshire Railway & Canal Company".

This latter company was amalgamated with the Great Western Railway Company as from 1st August 1880 under the Great Western Monmouthshire Railway Company's Amalgamation Act 2nd August 1880.
