Administrative / biographical background:

Incorporated under the title London and Southampton Railway Company under their Act of 25 July 1834, the company's name was changed after an Act of June 1839 to the London and South Western Railway Company. This latter Company was amalgamated into the Southern Railway Company under the Railways (Southern Group) Amalgamation Scheme in December 1922. The Southern Railway Company passed to the British Transport Commission under the Transport Act of 1947, incorporated under the title of London and Southampton Railway Company under their Act of 25 July 1834.
