Australia. 'Chart showing such parts of Terra Australis and its vicinity, as were discovered or examined by the following vessels: Schooner Francis in 1798, Sloop Norfolk in 1798 and 9, Schooner Cumberland in 1803 and HMS Investigator in 1801, 2 and 3 byM Flinders, Commander. The original charts are constructed upon a scale of four inches to a degree of longitude from which this abridgement was made whilst a prisoner on the Isle Mauritius. The dotted parts of the different tracks were run during night. Two arrows show the direction and strength of the winds. The coasts represented by the plain single are copied from other selected authorities, the shaded coasts only being seen by me in 1804'. Shows coastline, hydrography, tracks (including HMS Imperieuse), positions of where Endeavour struck, where Pandora was lost in 1791 and where Cartier struck in March 1800, mention of areas on New Guinea with dates - Louisiade of Bougainville 1768, Cape Valsche [Vals] 1770, Cape Rodney 1791 and low land 1792, and 3 compass roses. With inset showing Terra Australis as known before 1798. Stamped 'Hydrographical Office'. With annotation in red: 'Original'. Longitude and latitude grid marked |
