Medical journal of the convict ship Egyptian for April to August 1839 by John Grant Stewart during which time the said ship was employed in carrying convicts from Sheerness to Van Dieman’s Land.

Folios 8-9: Thomas Curtis, private in 51st Kings Own Regiment; case number 1; disease or hurt, exanthema [vanilla?]; put on sick list, 5 April 1839, Sheerness; discharged 5 April 1839 to Sheerness military hospital.

Folios 9-10: James Inglis, aged 15, no trade; case number 2; disease or hurt, acute glandular inflammation of the neck; put on sick list, 2 April 1839, Sheerness; landed 23 August 1839 in the same condition.

Folios 11-13: William Pickett, aged 16, trade, brazier; case number 3; disease or hurt, venereal sores on the prepuce. Had previously spent two months in Warwick jail, and 5 months in Euryalus hulk; put on sick list, 16 April 1839, Sheerness; discharged 23 May 1838 well.

Folios 13-14: Edward Burrows, aged 14, no trade; case number 4; disease or hurt, dysentery (had been 6 weeks in prison in London, and 4 months in Euryalus); put on sick list, 20 April 1839, Sheerness; discharged 2 May 1839 well.

Folios 14-17: John Vinson, aged 15, trade, smith; case number 5; disease or hurt, bronchial catarrh ( had been 20 weeks in prison at York Castle, 3 months in Euryalus); put on sick list, 26 April 1839, Sheerness; died 9 July 1839.

Folios 32-35: Surgeon’s general remarks. The number embarked on board Egyptian was two hundred and fourty, (180 convict boys, and 10 adult convicts, 22 guard, and a crew of 25, a woman and a child).
