Medical and surgical journal of HMS Acorn for 1 January to 31 December 1860 by William E O'Brien, during which time the said ship was employed in China.

Folios 1-24: A paper on the Practical Remarks on Periodic Fevers, Dysentery and Diarrhoea as they occur on the China Station by William E O'Brien, Surgeon, HMS Acorn.

Folios 25-26: Thomas Stevens, aged 30, sergeant of marines; case number 1; disease or hurt, rheumatism (had been invalided from the Crimea in 1856 for the same disease). Put on sick list, 26 November 1859 at Amoy. Discharged 27 February 1860 to the Inflexible for a passage to the hospital at Hong Kong.

Folios 26-27: John McLaughlin, aged 22, able seaman; case number 2; disease or hurt, epistaxis. Put on sick list, 7 February 1860 at Amoy. Discharged 1 April 1860 to duty.

Folios 27-30: Daniel Davroagh, aged 27, acting Boatswain; case number 3; disease or hurt, coma (possibly due to having been administered with a narcotic), having been sent ashore in perfect health was found in a house in a comatose state with marks of injury on his person. Put on sick list, 24 March 1860 at Amoy. Died 12 April 1860. Includes details of post mortem.

Folios 30-31: George Thompson, aged 25, able seaman; case number 4; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 18 February 1860 at Amoy. Discharged 10 June 1860 to hospital at Hong Kong.

Folios 31-33: William Barber, aged 25, private, Royal Marines; case number 5; disease or hurt, fever intermittent. Put on sick list, 13 May 1860 at Amoy. Discharged 10 June 1860 to the Melville hospital ship.

Folios 33-34: Mr Ryder, aged 17, midshipman; case number 6; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 24 May 1860 at Amoy. Discharged 17 June 1860 to duty.

Folio 34: Table 1: a nosological synopsis of the sick book kept during the period of the journal.

Folio 35: Table 2: A list of men who during the period of this journal, have received wounds or hurts which may disqualify them for the public service, or subsequently in any way interfere with their earning a livelihood. (No names recorded).

Folios 35-36: Table 3: A nosological table without reference to the period for which the journal is rendered, is to be made out invariably on the last day of December, so that it shall not include cases occurring on two separate years. The average numerical strength of the company 116.
