Francis Nwia Kwam NKRUMAH, aliases Nia Kosi NKRUMAH, Francis Nwie KWAME NKRUMAH, Nkrumah KWIA KOSI, Kwame NKRUMAH: Ghanaian. NKRUMAH, the first Prime Minister of independent Ghana, was a student, lecturer, journalist and politician in the United States and Britain between 1939 and 1947. During this period and after his return to Ghana (then the Gold Coast) he had strong Communist sympathies and contacts. On returning to Gold Coast/Ghana in 1947 he became active in politics and, in 1949, formed the country's principal Independence party, the Convention People's Party. In 1952 he became Prime Minister of the Gold Coast. These papers provide an account of NKRUMAH's political activity and associates in Britain and Gold Coast/Ghana during the period preceding independence
