Fred Hermann BRANDT: Estonian, naturalised German. Having passed through Estonian, Russian and Latvian citizenship, BRANDT became a German in 1941. He was an entomologist and had spent time doing research in Persia. In 1941 he was taken on by German Intelligence for a mission to Afghanistan to foment unrest. On his return to Berlin he joined the Brandenderg Regiment. In 1943 he had a posting to Albania and elsewhere in the Balkans. While there he established contact with a British officer who eventually arranged for his ''defection'' to the Allies
