Administrative / biographical background:

William John Hocking, CVO, CBE, entered the service of the Mint as Clerk in the Lower Division on 17 July 1883 and retired as Superintendent of the Mint on 15 July 1926.

He was responsible for the preparation of the Catalogues of Coins and Medals in the Mint Museum which were issued as official papers in 1906 and 1910 and are still used as works of reference.

His published works also include Notes on a Collection of Coining Instruments in the National Museum of Antiquities, Edinburgh, Society of Antiquaries, Scotland, 1915. He was appointed the first Curator of the Royal Mint Library and Museum while also serving as Assistant Superintendent of the Operative Department of the Mint.
