Description:

This series contains general subject files from the 93,000 and 100,000 series of the Ministry of Health. Most of the files were created after 1919, and relate to public health services. Subjects covered include blind welfare, cancer, maternity and child welfare, the General Nursing Council and nursing in general, health surveys, hospitals, infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, medical inspection of aliens, midwifery, propaganda and vaccination. Included in this series are several unregistered files dealing with infectious diseases, the effects of smog, vaccination and vaccine, and hospital finance. The series also contains some port health authority case files, and reports of medical officers of health, and port inspectors.

Custodial history: The MHRA was created in 2003. It assumed the responsibilities of the Medicines Control Agency (MCA), created in 1989, and the Medical Devices Agency (MDA), created in 1993. Prior to the creation of the MCA and MDA, the regulation of medicines and medical devices was undertaken by policy divisions in the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). When the Agency was created the records collection was split between MHRA and DHSC. The files in this series represent those for which MHRA retained ownership.
