Photographic prints made from the originals held in the photographic collection of the Public Information Department (formerly the Public Relations Department) of the Metropolitan Police Office. The photographs illustrate the development of the force from the earliest times to the present day, depicting various aspects of police work and equipment including, for example, buildings, vehicles, uniforms, and personnel on duty.

Administrative / biographical background:

In 1919 a Press Bureau was established in the Office of the Commissioner to serve as a liaison office between the police and the press, and it became attached to the Secretariat (S Department). In 1930 it was reorganised and enlarged. In 1945 a public information officer was appointed to direct the bureau and extend its functions. It was later absorbed within a Public Relations Department with news and publicity branches.
