Folio 106: telegram from Admiralty to Commander-in-Chief, Cape 15th August 1914, approved HMS Hyacinth to return to Cape. HMS Astraea to search for [German light cruiser] Konigsberg. telegram from S.N.O. [Senior Naval Officer] Zanzibar to Admiralty 15th August 1914, German authorities have hauled down their colours Geneva Cross on board [German ship] Tabora under protest.

Folio 107: telegram from Mr Carnegie, Lisbon to Admiralty 14th August 1914, Portuguese permit British troops to cross Portuguese East Africa.

Folio 108: telegram from Viceroy to Secretary of State for India 15th August 1914 -29th Panjabis and one section field ambulance will sail in Naidisag [Nairung] leaving Karachi 19th.

Folio 112: History Section Precis, (paper M 01405/14). b: telegram from Governor East Africa Protectorate (of 13-8-14). In view of statement that troops in Jubaland need not be moved, it will not be necessary to arrange for transport of troops from Kismayu to Mombasa.

Folio 115: telegram from Secretary of State to the Viceroy, Army Department 16th August 1914, Admiralty strongly deprecate Nairung sailing alone on 19th.

Folio 122: telegram from Commander-in-Chief, Cape to Admiralty 17th August 1914, submit that HMS Pegasus being alone, Zanzibar is risky. [German light cruiser] Konigsberg is much stronger. Propose HMS Astraea return from Inhambane and both search in company.

Folio 123: telegram from Admiralty to Commander-in-Chief via S.N.O.Simonstown 17th August 1914, convoy of Cape troops must be escorted by both HMS Astraea and HMS Hyacinth. Slight risk to HMS Pegasus at Zanzibar must be accepted.

Folio 125: draft from [Colonel] Sir George Aston to [Admiral] Sir Henry Jackson 17th August 1914, postponement of Expedition B may involve re-consideration of French proposal. Reply from Sir Henry Jackson, Concur. Shall wait a little.

Folio 126: telegram from Commander-in-Chief, East Indies, Bombay to Admiralty 17th August 1914, escort arrangements for Forces A and B.

Folio 127: telegram from C.O.S.[Chief of War Staff] to Admiralty 17th August 1914, necessity for Expedition A to reach Egypt as soon as possible. Will delay embarkation of Indian contingent to German East Africa. Suggest if HMS Fox is available she should escort 29th Punjabis to Zanzibar.

Folio 128: telegram from Admiralty to Commander-in-Chief, East Indies, HMS Swiftsure, Bombay 17th August 1914-order HMS Fox to meet 29th Punjabis and convoy them to Zanzibar.

Folio 129: telegram from HMS Pegasus, Zanzibar to Admiralty 17th August 1914, have visited Tanga (German East Africa). Flag of truce flying on arrival. Terms of truce communicated C-in-C, Cape of Good Hope. German ship Markgraf temporarily disabled by Germans also small craft claimed as prizes.

Folio 130: telegram from Secretary of State to Viceroy Army Department 17th August 1914, Turkey's attitude changes situation. Must reinforce Egypt. Expeditions B&C to be postponed and remainder of Expedition A expedited. 29th Punjabis may proceed to Zanzibar.

Folio 131a: telegram from Admiralty to Under Secretary of State for the Colonies 17th August 1914, SS Tabora under suspicion of misuse of the Geneva Cross at Zanzibar is not included on list of hospital ships furnished by German Government.

Folio 132: telegram from Commander-in-Chief, Cape to Admiralty 18th August 1914, lists terms of truce at Tanga [German East Africa].

Folio 136: telegram from Secretary of State to Viceroy 17th August 1914, asks if Government of India would undertake to repair and work the railways in German East Africa and outlines scale of work required. Sir William Johns available as Chief Engineer and ordered to Zanzibar.

Folio 140: telegram from Commander-in-Chief, East Indies, Bombay to Admiralty 19th August 1914, Transport Nairung [Asiatic Steam Navigation Company] with 29th Punjabis left Karachi today. Will be met by HMS Fox North Seychelles and convoyed to Zanzibar.

Folio 141: telegram from Admiralty to Commander-in-Chief, East Indies 19th August 1914, Admiralty are informing War Office and India Office that naval escort ready 20th August for Egyptian and East Africa forces. Important no delay.

Folio 143: telegram from Aden to Admiralty 19th August 1914, Zanzibar, Seychelles and Seychelles, Mauritius cables interrupted. Seychelles completely cut off.

Folio 144: telegram from Commander in Chief, East Indies to Admiralty 19th August 1914, gives changes in distribution of squadron.

Folio 145: telegram from Governor of Nyasaland to Secretary of State for the Colonies 19th August 1914, Governor of Quelimane and Governor Tete offered all possible support. A field force about 400 strong on its way up Lake Nyasa; weak in field guns compared to Germans. All efforts to obtain guns from South Africa and Rhodesia proved fruitless. Portuguese might help by allowing ammunition to pass through their territory.
