Description:

This series contains records of various Land Tenure Divisions and of the Agricultural Land Service relating to the management of land transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from the Agricultural Land Commission following its abolition in December 1963. The commission was replaced by the Estate Management Committee, whose minutes are included in the series. There are also examples to illustrate the ministry's policy as landlord including the estate at Laxton, Nottinghamshire, which is the last place in Europe where a medieval open-field agricultural system is still practised.

Most files dealing with particular estates contain plans or maps.

Administrative / biographical background:

The Agricultural Land Commission was replaced by the Estate Management Committee (EMC), supported by the headquarters divisions, with the Agricultural Land Service (ALS) continuing to act as the local land agent. The committee was composed of senior staff from the divisions and ALS, and chaired by the Director of the ALS. Properties handled by the Welsh Agricultural Land Sub-Commission were transferred to the Welsh Department.
