Content: Folio 188. Letter from Thomas N Firmin, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southampton Incorporation, to the Poor Law Board, enclosing a copy of a certificate signed by [P Mackay] the Medical Officer, which states that, during the present hot weather, bacon should be substituted for fresh meat for sick paupers on no 2 diet. Firmin adds that the guardians have directed the diet of sick paupers to be altered accordingly. Annotation: Mr Hawley [W H Toovey Hawley, Poor Law Inspector] sanctions the change of diet; he requests information about the quantities of bacon to be given to sick paupers on diet no 2.
