1 individual petition (Betsey Williams, wife of the prisoner) and 1 collective petition (13 signatories) on behalf of John Williams convicted at Salford Sessions in May 1829 for stealing five shillings. Grounds for clemency: the petitioner alleges that her husband was arrested only because of his presence in the street at the time of a 'turn out' [riot] in Manchester and that he took no direct part in the violence. Gaoler's Report: character middling. Convicted before. Initial sentence: 7 years' transportation. Annotated: nil. FO42
