This series contains papers of the Ministry of Food divisions responsible for food standards, labelling, food hygiene, welfare foods and special diets and some earlier papers on these subjects originating in the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Housing. Most of the papers are dated between 1940 and 1955. Exceptionally a few papers outside this date range have been included to preserve continuity.

Administrative / biographical background:

The Services Department of the Ministry of Food came into being at the time of the general re-organisation in January 1947 and comprised four groups and a secretariat. The Food Standards Group was responsible for the formulation of standards of quality for food, the protection of the consumer against misleading claims, the promotion of measures relating to hygienic conditions for the manufacture and handling of food and the allocation and distribution of welfare foods.
