Title: Court of King's Bench, Crown Side, and Supreme Court of Judicature, High Court of Justice, King's Bench Division: Miscellaneous Books
Description:

Mostly small regular series of records of the Court of King's Bench which cover quite long periods.

  • The main ones are Appearance Books, 1725 to 1843,
  • which list appearances made by attorneys on behalf of defendants;
  • Notice of Trial Books, 1698 to 1843, recording dates set at King's Bench or at nisi prius;
  • Process Books, 1776 to 1820, noting the issue of writs to London and Middlesex defendants indicted of trespasses ordering them to answer;
  • Writ Books, 1854 to 1912, recording the issue of Crown Side writs;
  • and books of registration appeals under the Registration of Voters Act of 1843, 1872 to 1912.

The rest are precedent books kept mainly by individual clerks of the crown from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries and often passed on to their successors. They relate mainly to the form of writs and pleas but contain much miscellaneous information about the court, including lists of Crown Side fees. The earliest material included in them dates from the fourteenth century, and some of it is taken from the memoranda rolls in KB 29, to which precise cross references are sometimes given.
