Description:

Report of William Kenrick on 1 individual petition (S Crofts, the prisoner's brother in law) and 2 collective petitions (31 people of Canterbury, including William Abbott, prosecutor and 126 Freemen of the City of Canterbury) on behalf of William Turmain (tried with Edward Herod) and convicted at the Dover Quarter Sessions held in late December 1812 of the theft of goods, property of William Abbot and William Kelsey. Turmain had previously been convicted of theft and confined on the hulks in 1808 where a prisoner had been murdered another prisoner had been executed for the crime on the evidence of Turmain. Turmain had received a pardon for acting as witness. Turmain later confessed to being the murderer. There are letters from William Kenrick, Robert Lushington and Lord Sidmouth. Initial sentence: death. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner's wife has dies, he has 3 small children and his mother was distraught. Recommendation: Turmain: no mercy. Herod: transportation for life. Folios 80-96.
