Administrative / biographical background:

A mixed National School was built in St John's Street in 1871. By 1927 the boys were being taught at Pells School (E/SC/114). In January 1932 it was agreed that senior and junior girls from St John's School would transfer to the Pells School. The school was closed in 1938, and many of the remaining pupils transferred to the Pells C E School
