Title: | Cobb of Margate, Family and Business Papers |
Description: |
General note. This vast accumulation of papers was removed from the Brewery when it was decided to demolish that building. The documents had been stored in the attics with consequent damage through damp in some cases. The whole relates to the story of the family from c. 1780 to 1940 and to the various businesses with which they were associated including banking, brewing, shipping agency and insurance. The records consist mainly of pieces of paper, a very few volumes survive partly because the brewery records are incomplete and partly because Lloyds Bank will have retained much banking material in 1892, when they absorbed Cobb's Bank. Until an index to persons is completed the value of the catalogue will be diminished, but many of the classes to which it relates are considerable in bulk and this list is consequently little more than a general class list for many parts of the collection. Nevertheless the records indicate the wide ranging philanthropic interests of the family and their political allegiance as well as providing much on the history of Margate, the dangers of the coast round the North Foreland and the banking, brewing and insurance interests. |

Arrangement: |
In sorting and arranging the papers an attempt has been made to relate correspondence to the various businesses or to an official activity, but this can only be done by reference to the contents of each letter and there is inevitably a considerable overlap in every direction. Administrative / biographical background: |
Francis Cobb, 1727-1802, was founder of the family fortunes and was followed by his son Francis jun., 1759-1831. Each was deputy-mayor Margate and the younger man took an active part in the Cinque Port defence during the French wars, 1793-1815. Later the affairs of the family centred in three other men: Francis William, 1787-1871 (s. of Francis jun.), his son Francis Carr Cobb, 1814-1904 and grandson Francis Marsden Cobb, 1845-1937. |
