Administrative / biographical background:

The county police force had its origins in the Norfolk Rural Police, formed in 1839 under the adoptive County Police Act, 2-3 Vic. c. 93. Its complement, duties and distribution were revised at intervals during the 19th century and in 1889 responsibility for constabulary matters was transferred from the Justices of the Peace to the County Council on its creation. There seems, however, to be little trace of this change in the records, which have been listed without regard to the alteration in administration. By the Norfolk Joint Police (Amalgamation) Order 1967 the Norfolk Constabulary, Norwich City Police Force and Great Yarmouth Borough Police were combined in January 1968.
