The bank commenced activity in Newbury on 22 July 1841, with John Knight as manager. It was to acquire premises in the Market Place, Newbury, and the Market Place, Reading, by 1847. It drew for funds on the Commercial Bank of London [failed 1861 and business acquired by the London & Westminster Bank, now part of the National Westminister Bank]. By 1854, the bank had been taken over by the London and County Joint Stock Banking Company (now also part of the National Westminster Bank) |
