Administrative / biographical background:

The foundation stone of St. Luke's was laid on 29 June 1836, and the church consecrated on 6 October 1839.

It was assigned a District from the parish of Manchester, by Bishop's Instrument, 7 February 1840, which was defined by Order in Council, 24 June 1856 (London Gazette 1 July).

Part of the parish was assigned to St. Mary's, Crumpsall, by Order in Council, 26 October 1860 (London Gazette, 30 October), and part to St. Thomas, Lower Crumpsall, by Order in Council, 10 June 1864 (London Gazette, 14 June).

In 1872, by Order in Council, 10 May (London Gazette, 14 May) St. John the Evangelist, Cheetham, was formed from St. Luke's, and in 1873 more of the parish was transferred to St. Thomas, Crumpsall, by Order in Council, 30 August (London Gazette, 2 September 1873).

In 1977 it was decided to demolish St. Luke's except for the tower. The last service was held on 16 October 1977 and the following week services began in the Trinity United Reformed Church, Greenhill Road. At the end of 1981 St. Luke's combined with Trinity United Reformed church and the Jesus Family in an ecumenical project.
