Administrative / biographical background:

The CLDC was asked by the DOE to sponsor an architectural competition. The Board agreed to make parcel 2 at Pope Lane available for the Developer/Designer Competition and decided on a brief with an emphasis on starter houses. For details of the brief see NTC 2/2/105. Milton Keynes was the other New Town to run a competition and in April 1981 the Secretary of State for the Environment presented the prizes. The design which won the CLDC competition was submitted by Whelmar.
