Physical description: 8 Subfonds
Immediate source of acquisition:

The following records were deposited in the Library in May 1970 by Philips, Brocklehurst Ltd. of Macclesfield, with the exception of M97/3 which was deposited in October 1950.

Administrative / biographical background:

John (1724-1803) and Nathaniel (1726-1808), second and third sons of John Philips of Tean and Checkley, Staffs., formed a partnership as smallware manufacturers or tape weavers in Tean in 1747. Their younger brother Thomas (1728-1811) soon joined them, as well as having a hatting business in Manchester. During the later 18th century they developed smallware weaving near Manchester at Radcliffe and Whitefield, Nathaniel taking up residence at Stand, Whitefield and Thomas at Sedgeley, Prestwich. In the 1770s the family had two smallware firms in Manchester itself, under the names of John and Nathanial Philips, and Nathaniel (1698-1776) and Falkner (born 1744) Philips, which remained distinct for another fifty years, and a hatting business under the name of Thomas and Nathaniel Philips. [For a discussion of the early years of the firm based on a letter book, 1753-1769 (M97/3) see The Cotton Trade and Industrial Lancashire, by A. P. Wadsworth and J. de L. Mann, 1965]

The Manchester firm of J. and N. Philips became the headquarters of a nationwide merchanting and manufacturing enterprise.

In 1830 they acquired an interest in the firm of James Chadwick and Brother of Eagley Mills, near Bolton, cotton spinners and thread-makers, which, however, retained its old name until well into the 20th century.

In 1914 they opened a warehouse in London.

In 1915 they became a Private Limited Co. and in 1919 a Public Limited Company.

In 1921 they expanded their premises in Church Street, Manchester, where they had been situated since 1826, by purchasing the firm of Isaac Thorp and Sons, textile manufacturers and warehousemen.

In 1926 they acquired a large interest in Smiths of Witney, blanket manufacturers.

During the Second World War part of the Church Street premises were requisitioned by the Ministry of Works and used for the censorship of mail of British prisoners of war. (M97/10/25/10-14)

J. and N. Philips and Co. Ltd. closed in 1970.
