Description:

20th Feb. 1865. David Marsden, at Chester, to John Trevor Chairman of Finance Committee. On 5th Aug. 1841, he was bound apprentice to Mr. Alexr. Booth of this city, hatter and furrier, for seven years and completed the term. He now finds the indentures had not been enrolled and that Mr. Booth has lost them and he wishes to claim his freedom. Note added by John Walker that if the binding, loss of affidavit, he is of opinion that the applicant will be entitled to be admitted to the freedom. With:-

 

28th Feb. 1865. Mr. Alexr. Booth's letter stating that David Marsden was formerly his apprentice and served his full term.

 

8th March, 1865. Letter from Alexr. Booth, stating that Edward Pointon served his apprenticeship with him and he gave up his indentures some years ago.

 

6th May 1865. J. Edwards from Blue Coat Hospital, Chester, to Mr. Paul, Town Office, stating that the Overseer of Little St. John's is Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards, Canal St.

 

29th June 1865. John (?) Jeffrey from Town Clerk's Office Northampton, to J. Walker, Town Clerk. He will send the information regarding their Town Hall in a day or so.

 

7th Aug. 1865. Hostage & Tatlock, from Sheriff's Office, Bridge House, Chester, to G.W. Railway accident. In reply to his enquiry respecting Mr. Rigg's charge in this matter, he made an examination of the locomotive which exploded and subsequently made several experiments to ascertain the cause of the explosion and attended as a witness on the adjourned inquest which lasted between 9 & 10 hours.

 

15th July 1865. Printed form for an Estimate for printing for the Council... for one year from 1st Sept. 1865, sent by John Walker and returned completed by John Tracey, Endorsed: "Notices of Estimates sent to the Chester Newspapers".

 

1865. Draft form of appointment of an Alderman by the Mayor, to be one of the Aldermen for the coming election in a Ward of the City. Pencil notes are added but are scarcely legible.

 

9th Nov. 1865. Draft copy of resolution of a Quarterly meeting of the Council held at the Savings Bank, Grosvenor Street, appointing a Committee to carry out the provisions of Acts of 19 Vict., 15 Vict., and 17 Vict. and the regulations of the General Board of Health issued under the authority of the said Act intitulated "An Act for the better prevention of diseases." The Common Seal is applied with the signatures of the Mayor and Town Clerk. Both these signatures and part of the list of the committee members are crossed through in pencil.

 

9th Nov. 1865. Draft copy of resolution of a Quarterly meeting appointing a committee for more conveniently carrying out "An Act for the better paving lighting and improving the Borough of Chester and for establishing new Market places therein" (9 Vict.). Signed and sealed by the Mayor and Town Clerk. Both the signatures and the list of committee members are crossed through in pencil.
