Meetings of Methodists in the Middleton area began in 1800, and in 1820 Lane End or Hillock Sunday School was built at the junction of Foxdenton and Grimshaw Lanes. With the development of Middleton following the arrival of the railway a new school became necessary, which was opened in 1874 as Middleton Junction Wesleyan School. The school was taken over Chadderton School Board in 1894.
