The Tomlin family, which originated from Northampton, seems to have set up business in Leicester around 1840. From trade directories it appears that several members of the family were engaged in separate cutlery and shoe machinery manufacturing businesses during the second half of the 19th Century. William Tom Bowler Tomlin, who ran his own small business until his death around 1924, married Selina Jane Pole of Belgrave. Their daughter, Catharine Mary Tomlin, assisted at Leicester's "Olde Englishe Faire" in 1916 (see programme and photographs). It is thought that her husband, Charles Leslie Welch, was responsible for rescuing the diary of Amy Storm (DE 4601/31) when he undertook some plumbing work at Quenby Hall. |
