Title: | Borough Deeds and Leases |
Description: |
A collection of deeds, mainly leases, of borough property, though including other types, such as those dealing with the Windsor and Eton water supply. With the exception of five medieval deeds, 1309-1376, and two related deeds of the sixteenth century (ref WI/AT1/463-469), theses date from 1603 to 1874 Although originally arranged in several bundles, the deeds are now stored, and must be ordered, as individual units A detailed calendar of the deeds is available in the Record Office. It was prepared between 1958 and 1961 by the late Shelagh Bond, MA, FRHistS, Hon. Archivist to the Dean and Canons of Windsor, at the request of the then Town Clerk Unfortunately the only copy available is a photocopy of a poor quality carbon copy, and is too indistinct for transcription for A2A. However what is given here is an introductory note and the topographical summary Introduction The deeds comprised, when examined in 1958, 18 original bundles containing some 359 deeds, together with 115 loose deeds, stored in two large black deed boxes in the Kipling Memorial Building, Windsor. The loose deeds were subsequently grouped for convenience into six further bundles The bulk of the deeds are leases, dating (with the exception of the 7 earliest, AT1/463-469) from 1603 to 1874. It seems clear that from at least the end of seventeenth century surrendered leases were put into a bundle at the end of each decade, and as can been seen from the list below, the deeds are so preserved with few exceptions from 1700 to 1830. There is a separate bundle, 1697-1858, relating to water supply property The original bundles were arranged as follows 1603-1679 'Surrendered Leases' AT1/186-228 1702-1710 'Surrendered Leases no. 3' AT1/154-185 1711-1721 AT1/358-374 1721-1730 'Surrendered Leases, no. 5' AT1/1-12 1731-1740 'Surrendered Leases, no. 6' AT1/26-49 1741-1750 AT1/229-243 1754-1760 AT1/13-25 1761-1770 plus 1841, 1843 AT1/244-258 1752, 1771-1780 AT1/341-357 1782-1790 AT1/426-448 1791-1800 AT1/278-301 1801-1810 AT1/375-400 1811-1819, 1830-1858 AT1/259-277 1821-1829 AT1/401-425 1837 AT1/449-451 1723-1859 AT1/99-115 1697-1858 Water supply property AT1/126-153 1794-1874 'Church Street' AT1/452-458 The loose deeds were arranged in the following artificial bundles : 1309-1582 AT1/463-469 1612-1846 AT1/50-98 1613-1846 AT1/302-340 1666-1670 AT1/459-462 1740-1774 AT1/470-475 1812-1855 AT1/116-125 There are three types of property involved in the leases proper (1) encroachments on to the street, usually strips of land (2) vaults and cellars under the street, usually separate from the houses behind (3) urban and country property, mainly in Windsor, but some in Bray, Winkfield, etc The calendar is arranged in numerical order, the order in which the documents themselves are still preserved. However, for any clear understanding of the properties, a catalogue raisonne, or topographical summary, is essential, and this been attempted, with a brief note at the head of each group of properties relating to the deeds. For the purposes of this exercise the deeds have been grouped as follows I St Alban's Street (Priest Street); Church Street (Fish Street or Fish Market); Market Place; Market affairs; Market Street (Butchers or Queen Street); Castle Hill II Sheet Street; Park Street; Frogmore Green; by Long Walk; Bachelors' Acre; Grove Road area III Peascod Street; Spittal area IV Castle Ditch; High Street V Non Windsor VI Windsor Underore; Windsor water supply; Thames fishing It is important to realise that there are also Lease Books (WI/AT2/1-4) containing transcripts of many of the borough leases, 1658-1933, but not all the leases were copied in, especially during the earlier period. Finally, there are the valuable plans of property owned by the borough, comprising one volume 1793-1835, and one bundle of 28 loose plans, 1736-1887 (WI/AT3/1,2) Topographical summary I.
