Mount Pleasant Schools, Hastings, East Sussex

The Boys' and Girls' Departments of Mount Pleasant Board School were opened on 15 January 1883. It was run by the Hastings and St Leonards School Board, which had been set up in February 1871. In 1903, following the 1902 Education Act, the school came under the control of the Education Committee of the Borough of Hastings. The managers under the new committee first met on 9 June 1903 (E/SC/83/1/1-2)

The boys' school amalgamated with the Clive Vale Boys' School in August 1939 and the Mount Pleasant Boys' School closed down on 17 August 1939 (E/SC/83/1/2). An infant and junior school continues to be recorded in the Sussex Directories at Mount Pleasant up to 1950 and the infants school alone up to 1958. In 1952 a new junior school called Elphinstone School was opened in Parker Road and the Mount Pleasant School was used as an annexe until it was finally closed in 1984. Mount Pleasant Infants' School at Elphinstone Avenue is listed in the Directories between 1969 and 1974. Mount Pleasant Infants School is also recorded in the Elphinstone Junior School admission registers up to 1976. By 1979 it had become the Elphinstone Infants' School
