These records illustrate the projects undertaken by the firm of Poulson until 1970, and thereafter by Alistair McCowan and Associates, consulting engineers. Until 1982 the firm operated from offices at 2a Ropergate, Pontefract, designed by J G L Poulson Ltd (see C391/2/129).
About ten per cent of the firm's surviving archive was selected for permanent preservation. Sampling on a geographical basis (e.g. developments in West Yorkshire) and on the basis of types of buildings was considered, but it was decided to keep a limited record of every project. Therefore, where extant, site plans, and a plan, section and elevation of most parts of the building were kept. Duplicate drawings and non-architectural drawings (of heating, water supply, engineering details, etc) were discarded as confidential waste.
