INTRODUCTION This is the thirty fifth volume of Additional Manuscripts (Add Mss) to have been catalogued in the West Sussex Record Office and it has been compiled, in general, along the lines indicated in the introduction to the first volume in November 1956 The class of Additional Manuscripts embraces all the smaller gifts and deposits of documents received by the West Sussex Record Office, as distinct from the large family and estate collections, such as the Goodwood Mss., or accumulations from solicitors' offices, such as Oglethorpe and Anderson Mss.; collections of official bodies, such as Quarter Sessions Records; or collections from other bodies, such as the Records of the Royal Sussex Regiment, each of which is referred to and quoted by name. The majority of Additional Manuscripts have been deeds of title, though increasingly a healthy balance of a vast range of other original material has been catalogued in these volumes. However, the pressure of the sheer weight of material to be catalogued has meant that since volume twenty nine in March 1983, the catalogues of title deeds, instead of being the detailed calendars that had been prepared until that date, have mainly been catalogued in summary lists, with the emphasis being placed on the property concerned in the transaction, rather than on the parties involved, or the technicalities of the type of legal conveyance being used. From this volume, the Accession number of each collection catalogued is given at the head of each separate catalogue This catalogue lists the usual number of small deposits, mostly concerning deeds of title, but it also includes records of a number of local organisations such as the Arundel Clerical Association, 1946-1976 (Add Mss 34777-34783); the Midhurst Thursday Club, 1954-1983 (Add Mss 34992-35004); and the Log Books of the Royal Observer Corps, 1940-1945 (Add Mss 35410-35421). Among sporting records catalogued are those of Chichester Priory Park Cricket Club, 1878-1984 (Add Mss 35725-35737), and similar additional Score Books of Henfield Cricket Club, 1926-1983 (Add Mss 35760-35807). Cultural records include the papers of Chichester Ballet Club, 1946-1972 (Add Mss 35088-35102), and among the literary papers are those of the Sussex novelist Michael Burt, 1900-1967 (Add Mss 35483-35528), and some miscellaneous papers of Lindsay Fleming, 1887-1981 (Add Mss 35968-35984). Of particular interest are very detailed correspondence and plans of the building of Bailiffscourt in Climping, 1911-1982 (Add Mss 35104-35222). The documents range in date from a title deed of property in Rudgwick, 1456 (Add Mss 35529) to Chakrit Choomwattana's 1986 Ph.D. thesis, 'The Opposition to the new Poor Law in Sussex, 1834-1837' (Add Mss 34791) No index has been provided for this volume, as all the relevant details of this and all previous volumes have been included in the card indexes of persons, places, manors and subjects, which are to be found in the Search Room of the West Sussex Record Office Searchersare again asked to exercise care in quoting references, and to use the form Add Mss followed by the relevant number or numbers.
