Administrative / biographical background:

The Manor of Tillingham first appears in 1443, in the possession of William Finch. It then followed the descent of the Manors of Playden Mascall and Peasmarsh Prebend (see, VCH vol 9 pp 157-158, 161)

The Manor of Peasmarsh Prebend was granted after the Dissolution to Sir Anthony Browne of Battle Abbey and his wife Elizabeth. Their son Sir Anthony Viscount Montague sold the manor in 1557 to Robert Sheppard of Peasmarsh and his son Alexander. Alexander Sheppard inherited the manor in 1575 and his son, William, died seised of the manor in 1634

In 1697 the Manor of Tillingham was held by Margaret Sheppard widow, the heirs of Margaret hands of Robert and John Mascall; these two held courts jointly in 1743, while Robert alone held them from 1748 to 1753, and John from 1758 until his death in 1769, when his property passed to his son Robert. Robert Mascall left the manor in his will to his cousin, Robert Mascall (1763-1815) of Ashford in Kent and Peasmarsh Place

He married Martha Curteis (1768-1845) the sister of Edward Jeremiah Curteis (1762-1835) of Windmill Hill Place in Wartling. Robert Mascall died on 23 February 1815 and his only son, Robert Curteis Mascall, died on 19 May 1816. The manor was divided between Robert's three daughters; Frances Ann (1793-1871) who married William Kenrick (1774-1829) of Broome Hall, Bletchworth in Surrey, Anne Catherine (1806-1833) who married Richard Fiennes Wykham-Martin of Leeds Castle in Kent, and Caroline Sarah (1802-1825) who married her cousin Herbert Barrett Curteis (1793-1847) the son of Edward Jeremiah Curteis of Windmill Hill Place in Wartling

By 1849 the whole had come into the hands of Herbert Mascall Curteis (1824-1895) the son of H B Curteis

The Peasmarsh Place Estate and a portion of the Knelle Estate was offered for sale at auction in 16 lots by Messrs Daniel Smith, Son and Oakley at The London Tavern, Bishopsgate Street, London on 24 Jul 1866; the Manors of Peasmarsh Prebend and Tillingham formed part of lot 1 (see SAS/DE 519). Lots 1-4, 7-16 were purchased by the Revd Henry George Liddell of Charlton Kings, Cheltenham in Gloucestershire for £125,000 and the property conveyed to him by Herbert Mascall Curteis and the trustees of the will of Herbert Barrett Curteis on 14 Dec 1867 (see SAS/DE 320,323)

The Revd H G Liddell had sold the Manor of Tillingham to Charles Liddell by 1875

The Manor held lands in Peasmarsh and Udimore. However the Lord of the Manor progressively bought out the tenants of the manor; in 1819 there were twelve tenants, in 1849 four tenants and in 1875 only two tenants
