Documents deposited by the Rt. Hon. Sir Thomas Fermor-Hesketh, 1st Baron Hesketh of Hesketh, 8th Baronet and 19th Lord of Rufford, 31 May 1947.

Rufford belonged, in 1212, to Chester abbey, but somewhat later it was held of the abbot by Richard Fitton, from him descending to his two daughters, one of whom married William of Hesketh. His son John became sole lord in 1318 and the estate descended regularly to Sir Thomas George Fermor-Hesketh, who was created Baron Hesketh of Hesketh in 1935.

Great Harwood was also a Fitton manor, the whole of it becoming Hesketh property in 1310. About 1290 the estate of Tottleworth in Rishton was purchased. From 1558 until 1800 the Heskeths were lords of a moiety of the manor of Croston.

When Lord Hesketh gave Rufford Old Hall to the National Trust he included a small number of documents, mainly mediaeval. These are in the Record Office (DDN) but have, for simplicity's sake been assimilated with the following survey. Another group of Hesketh documents was acquired by Col. John Parker of Browsholme and there is yet a further collection in the muniments of the earl of Derby
