The collection contains over three hundred ballads and related research. The ballads are often referred to in academic works by their sequential number, for example Lord Randall is Child #12 and Sir Patrick Spens is Child #58.

The Child Ballads have been released in both the UK by Topic Records and in the USA by Folkways and Riverside records. The sound recordings featured here are from both the Topic, Folkways and Riverside record labels.
