Administrative / biographical background:

A Local Board was formed for the parish of New Shoreham in 1865, under the Local Government Act, 1858. It was succeeded in January 1895 by an Urban District Council, under the terms of the Local Government Act, 1894.

By a Local Government Board Order, which came into operation on 1st October 1910, Kingston-by-Sea, together with parts of Lancing and Old Shoreham were added to the Urban District, which was renamed Shoreham-by-Sea.

(For a plan, see County Council records, ref. CP9).

By the Shoreham-by-Sea Urban District (Extension) Order, 1927, part of the parish of Lancing was transferred to the parish and Urban District of Shoreham-by-Sea.

(For a plan, see County Council records, ref. CP24 A).

By the West Sussex Review Order, 1933, the Urban District was extended to include the parish of Old Shoreham.

(For a map, see County Council records, ref. CC743).

By a West Sussex County Council Order of 1938, the Urban Districts of Southwick and Shoreham, together with the parish of Lancing and part of the parish of Sompting, would have been formed into a new Urban District of Kingston Buci. However, the outbreak of war meant that this Order never came into effect.

(For a plan of the proposed District see UD/SH/15/2/5).
