Formed in 1940, the Battalion consisted of two companies of old soldiers from 11th Battalion and two companies of young men who had volunteered, but were to young for active service. In 1941, it moved into Southern Command and relieved the 11th Battalion. It was engaged in civil defence duties until its disbandment in 1943.
