The ecclesiastical parish of St John the Evangelist was formed on 22 July 1870 from the ancient parish of Hollington and was enlarged in 1902 taking in a northern part of the parish of Hastings St Mary-in-the-Castle. The church was built in 1865. Two chapels of ease of St Mary-in-the-Castle, St James Silverdale and St Peter Baldslow, were transferred to the parish of Hollington St John the Evangelist following the boundary changes in 1902 (see PAR 535 and PAR 536).
