Ms journal (97pp) kept while a prisoner of war near Zentsuji, Innoshima Island, Japan, during the Second World War, containing: numerous amateur poems; a resumé (8pp) of his experiences as a prisoner of war in Boei Glodok camp, Batavia (March - October 1942), his voyage to Japan (October/ November 1942) including experiences in the Dai Nichi Maru, and in Japan (November 1942 - August 1945); a diary (38pp) of his experiences immediately before the Japanese surrender and up to his liberation (12 August - 12 September 1945).

Administrative / biographical background:

Bonnes was a Corporal serving with 605 Squadron Auxiliary Air Force during the Second World War and arrived in Batavia from Scotland on 3 Feb 1942. After the surrender of 9 March 1942 he was imprisoned at Boei Glodok camp, Batavia until 21 October 1942. He then sailed to Formosa via Singapore in the Dai Nichi Maru and then onward to Japan where he arrived on 26 November 1942. He was imprisoned in a camp near Zentsuji on Innoshima Island and forced to work the dockyards at Habu until the Japanese surrender in August 1945.
