Administrative / biographical background:

The South Molton United Schools were formed in 1877 from three constituent bodies, the Hugh Squier Free School (founded 1682), the Bluecoat School (founded 1711), and the National School (founded 1833-34).

Besides records of the South Molton United Schools, the present collection includes papers relating to the British (Infants) Schools and the Science and Art School. The connecting link is the common secretary and correspondent shared by the schools. Joseph Kingdon was followed in this capacity by Attree Powell, their joint period of office running from the 1890s to the 1940s. Furthermore, the United and British Schools were run by a single Board from 1903.

The list is based upon a Report compiled by the Devon Record Office in 1973.
