An interview with H. M. Cashmore at aged 77, former deputy librarian at the Birmingham Library talks about his life and work.

Track 1 - 12: Cashmore talks about his work as deputy librarian at the Birmingham Library and his appointment to the post of Head Librarian, with reference to the growth and development of libraries in Birmingham when the boundaries of the city expanded in 1911, and how he used to officially travel abroad to report on the libraries of Europe. Cashmore tells tales of protest and an arson attack on the library by the Suffragettes in 1914. He also discusses his time in administration service in the army during World War I; as well as discussion on the art of reading and comparisons across Europe, particularly in Russia during Stalin's rule.
